Dan McKay was born in Monroe and raised in Mangham in Richland Parish, Louisiana. He is a graduate of the LSU Law Center (JD, Law). He is a U.S. Army veteran with two years of overseas service and later served as the commanding officer of his Army Reserve unit in Baton Rouge while attending law school. Between his active-duty Army service and the start of his legal career, he worked in broadcasting, construction, and the offshore oilfield. He has maintained a general “country” law practice in Avoyelles Parish for more than 45 years. During that time, he served as a public defender for 15 years and as an assistant district attorney for over 11 years. He has also been honored to serve as city attorney for Bunkie for a total of 12 years, and for Hessmer for 24 years and Evergreen for 18 years. Dan has been a member of the Bunkie Rotary Club for more than 40 years, serving twice as president. He has been married to Adrienne Lee McKay of Bunkie for 48 years. They have three children and six grandchildren. Dan and his wife are members of Emmanuel Baptist Church (a non‑Southern Baptist church) in Alexandria, Louisiana, where they have worshiped since 2015. His decades of “country law” practice have given him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by everyday citizens and small businesses. Dan has lived in Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District for practically his entire life. He knows the district and its people well. He recognizes the region’s struggles with population loss, poverty, and blight, as well as the complex role chemical plants and data centers play in providing new jobs. He also appreciates the district’s beautiful farmland, forests, lakes, rivers, and bayous — the landscape that makes Louisiana a true sportsman’s paradise.
